King Chulalongkorn Memorial Day
Festivals & Events

© Krabi Magazine

October 23rd
Marks the death anniversary of Rama V, one of the greatest leaders in Thai history. King Chulalongkorn was the first Thai king to travel abroad, in times when Siam was under the threat of colonization from both the British and the French. During his reign, he placed an emphasis on several reforms such as the introduction of postal and telegraph services and the construction of a railway network, bridges and irrigation canals. His reign brought Thailand into the modern age and halted aggression from foreign countries with amiability and prudence. In remembrance of one of the best-loved and most-revered kings in Thai history, Thai people from all walks of life gather at the Royal Plaza in Bangkok on this day to pay homage to King Chulalongkorn by laying flowers around his equestrian statue. King Chulalongkorn Memorial Day is celebrated throughout the country.
